Free Walk and Talk: Discover Art at STEAM with Katie Ackrill

This informal walk and talk will introduce visitors to artworks from Swindon’s modern and local art collections, which are currently on show at STEAM.

Hubert, Cook, Electric Welder, painting

These include depictions of Swindon and its surrounding countryside from the 19th and early 20th centuries, which are included in displays of the GWR Offices. Visitors will also be given exclusive access to a display of atmospheric paintings and lithographs by Swindon artist Hubert Cook, showing life in the GWR Works in the 1940s.

The displays are part of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery’s Art on Tour project, which will take Swindon’s significant art collections to more places throughout the town in 2020.

These talks are free and visitors do not need to hold a STEAM admission ticket to attend. Please sign up at reception upon arrival.

Friends Talk - Bournemouth Arts Club 1920-2020: A Mirror of the Times

Over the past 100 years Bournemouth Arts Club (BAC) has responded to radical ideas and changing approaches in art.

Dr Gill Clarke will discuss BAC’s formation and how under its Presidents Sir David Murray, Henry Lamb, Richard Eurich and others, it sought to foster expertise through lectures, weekend schools, and exhibitions which were often held at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum.  Exhibitions featured loans from nationally significant collections including in 1957 from the Swindon Collection which will also be highlighted.  Members’ work to be featured will include Maxwell Armfield, Lucy Kemp-Welch, Harold Williamson and more recently Martin Brewster, Kenneth Hatts, Joy Parsons and Jennifer Surridge.

Friends of Swindon MAG talks take place at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.  Doors open at 7pm.

This exciting talk will give visitors information about artworks from Swindon’s collection, which are currently on display at the Civic Offices.

Highlights of the talk will include Claude Francis-Barry’s striking painting of Tower Bridge during the Second World War, Desmond Morris’ vibrant depiction of Diana Doors, and works by significant Swindon-born artists Roy Bizley and Harold Dearden.

The display is a part of the Art on Tour project, which will share artworks from Swindon Museum and Art Gallery’s collection with other venues in Swindon throughout 2020. It includes a vibrant cross section of works spanning a time frame of 1904 – 2019, and covers a broad range of subject matter and styles.
