The Museum and Art Gallery Collections are rich with stories and curriculum links which lend themselves to discovery, enjoyment, and study across the Key Stages. We have a variety of options available at all Key Stages, both on-site and as outreach in school and youth group settings. This page gives information for on-site visits; for more information about the Art on Tour Outreach Programme, click here. For more information on the Museum and Gallery Collections, click here

Art on Tour at Home is launching a library of FREE teaching and learning resources for busy schools, teachers and parents. The focus is on using art to bring learning to life across the curriculum. Designed to support teachers with art education, downloadable teacher toolkits provide practical suggestions for exploring artworks and using them across the curriculum. Our range of Art Burst learning resources are designed to keep curious hands and minds busy! For art leads, non-specialists, senior leaders, parents and anyone involved in the business of developing creative children! Created by experienced teachers, the resources can be used to facilitate learning for children of all ages and abilities.

On-site Self-led Packages - for Schools and Youth Groups:

We offer three self-led learning packages for schools and youth groups to help children discover the Museum and Art Collections. These are aimed at KS2 and 3, but there are many opportunities to engage other Key Stages. Please contact us to discuss specific requirements.

  • Local History Study – a series of tasks that identify some of the historical people and places that have defined Swindon.
  • Modern Art and the Swindon Collection – this package teaches ways of engaging with modern art and facilitates exploration of the Swindon Collection.
  • Swindon at War – tasks which support children in exploring the impact of WWI on Swindon and discovering the work of influential war artists.

Sessions include electronic resource packs, printable by schools and groups, which are emailed in advance to allow introductory work in the classroom. They also contain follow-up activities. You will be welcomed on entry to the Museum and Art Gallery, and staff will be on hand to answer questions. These are however self-led packages. We encourage pre-visits. Sessions take on average 90 minutes to complete. Children can then be given a further 30 minutes supervised free time for further exploration of the Museum and Gallery.

You are always welcome to devise your own session using the Museum and Gallery as a base. We are happy to supply copies of our current Gallery worksheets to support your visit.

Planning a Visit:

  • School and youth group visits are available to book on Mondays and weekday evenings. In some circumstances we do consider visits on other days; please contact us for information.
  • School and youth group visits incur a charge. Pre-visits by teachers and staff are free.
  • We offer self-led packages for groups of up to 35 children.

If you would like to find out more about a learning session or arrange a pre-visit to Swindon MAG, please email us at swindonmag@swindon.gov.uk

Important Information:

Please note that there is no formal facility for storing bags and coats at the Museum and Gallery. There is also no dedicated space for refreshments or lunches. There are two unisex toilets available. Very sadly, the main art gallery and museum galleries are not wheel-chair accessible.

Due to capacity issues, any organised group of 15 people and above that has not booked in advance will not be admitted during opening hours. We will reserve the right to refuse admission where we believe there is a safety or capacity risk.

Please ensure you read the Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work documentation prior to booking a visit.
